Easy DIY project: old family photos hung together on a wall hanging instead of staying in storage for the whole family

I have so many old photos from my family’s past but I never print my photos these days. As much as I love taking photos, I rarely go beyond having them exist anywhere other than on my phone. So recently I had some printed out and for all that effort I put into snapping shots of my favorite places, things that inspire me, and moments I loved, it’s nice to have little mementos to actually look at in real life. So I saw this really simple DIY photo wall hanging DIY on Pinterest and it accented the wall in a cool and modern way, perfect for hanging up inspiration in a workspace or just a casual way to house memories. 10. Easy Pineapple DIY Bookends

diycandy

Easy DIY project: pineapple shaped bookends painted for a simple colorful shelf accessory for the whole family

DIY bookends project is one of the simplest projects EVER. To give you some background, this is the fix for a shelf, a mantel or a piano top that looks bought and painted a used piano for my house, and am with height. I knew I wanted to display some of our favorite classic books and needed some bookends to hold them in place. We, like everyone else, are obsessed with the pineapple trend right now, so that seemed like the natural choice. So let me tell you how easy this is, go to Michael’s and get two wooden pedestals $1 each, 2 faux pineapples, then glue them down with a hot glue gun. Spray paint them gold and you have got a very impressive DIY project. They look elegant on my grand piano.

13. DIY Cardboard Pom Pom Maker

The Craft Train
Cardboard pom pom maker built to wrap yarn into plump store bought looking pom poms at home for the whole family
Three yarn pom poms on a white surface, a big teal, a big pale pink and a small yellow, all plump enough to pass for store-bought. (Image credit: The Craft Train)

A pom pom maker cut from a scrap of cardboard, so the tool costs nothing and the raw material is already sitting in your recycling. It comes in three sizes, chunky yarn makes the big fluffy ones and finer yarn makes the little guys, and pom poms come off it so fast the only real limit is your yarn stash (the cardboard donut method we all grew up with takes roughly one childhood per pom pom, by my math). Kids can handle nearly all of it, with one very tight knot being the spot where a grown-up hand helps, and I can just about promise they’ll still be going after you’ve stopped. The templates and the how-to are over on The Craft Train, so that’s where to go to make yours.

Easy DIY project: stained glass style ornaments framed in popsicle sticks around colored tissue paper
Three stained glass ornaments strung on twine, black popsicle stick frames around colored tissue paper with a dark silhouette on each, looking far fancier than their price tag. (Image credit: Glue Sticks and Gumdrops)

No actual glass in these stained glass ornaments, which is exactly why the kids get to make them. Popsicle sticks painted black frame a square of bright tissue paper, a black paper angel sits in front and a twine loop hangs it on the tree, where the lights glow through it like a tiny church window (park one in a real window and it’s a suncatcher until March). The fiddly cuts on the silhouette are the one spot little hands want help, and I’d bet these are the ornaments you’ll still be hanging when those hands are bigger than yours. Download the silhouette template from Glue Sticks and Gumdrops and let them walk you through the rest.

Four faux stone planters with a rough pale finish lined up on a brick porch, full of pink dahlias, white daisies and lavender, and not one of them is heavy. (Image credit: The Design Twins)

Your cheapest plastic pots are about to fib to everyone who walks up your porch steps, because a layer of joint compound scraped over the outside gives them that heavy, chipped-from-a-quarry texture (the brand The Design Twins use goes on pink and dries white, so you’ll know exactly when it’s ready for paint). After that it’s Fusion Mineral Paint in whatever color you already own, a bit of antique stain for the weathered look and two quick coats of polyacrylic so the rain can’t undo your work. Planters that look like they took two people to carry out there but move with one hand are the easy DIY projects I live for. The Design Twins skip the ten-plus-step versions floating around and get you there in a fraction of the time, so borrow their shortcut and fill yours with blooms.

41. DIY Hoop Tassel Earrings

Lia Griffith Tassel earrings made from a scrap of cardboard and a plain hoop for an easy dressed up accessory for the whole family

Tassel earrings are an easy way to dress up a plain hoop, and Lia Griffith’s version skips anything complicated. Grab a scrap of cardboard about two and a half inches tall, wrap embroidery floss around it thirty times, then tie off the top and snip the bottom loops free. Thread a head pin through a small metal cap, twist a wire wrapped loop, then glue the floss into the cap with E6000 so it won’t budge. Needle nose pliers and wire cutters are really all you need beyond scissors, so there’s no big supply list. What I like is how easy it’d be to make a few pairs in different colors for gifts. Lia Griffith walks through the whole process with photos.
